About Jason Berry

How did you get started with photography?

It was 2005 and I had just graduated boot camp a few months ago. They sent me to Coast Guard Station Bodega Bay and it was gorgeous there! Around that time is when I bought my first digital camera and started snapping pictures of everything around me. I would take pictures just to document the environment around me to then show my friends and family when I came home on leave. Back then my pictures were pretty terrible, but the seed was planted for what later became a full blown career in photography.

Did you go to school for photography?

In 2007 I took my very first photography class at Golden West College to learn more about photoshop. That class would be the first of many many photography classes from different schools. I was hooked on photography and just started following my passion to where it led me. From 2008-2010 I attended De Anza College in Cupertino and studied Art History, Black and White Film Photography, Conceptual and Contemporary photography. I spent so many hours in the darkroom, smelling like developing chemicals and perfecting my dodging and burning techniques. From De Anza College I moved back to Southern California and transferred my college credits to Cypress College. My instructors at Cypress pushed me to work hard and become a better photographer. They saw something in me which was probably my burning passion for creating images and the drive to become the best in the class. While I was attending Cypress College a lot of opportunities presented themselves and I jumped at every opportunity to use my skills and my camera. I had the privilege of photographing the President of Cypress at the time, I also shot several class schedule covers, documented events for the North Orange County School District and even working them to create a catalog of images. In May 2014 I graduated from Cypress College with an Associates Degree in Photography. A lot of you might not know this but I was a college dropout having attended only one semester at Azusa Pacific University. Being the first one in my family to graduate from college was a big accomplishment for me. It proved to myself and to my friends and family that if I put my mind to something and work hard at it anything is possible.

What do you do for fun?

This is usually something I ask all my couples. What are those things or activities that you do in your free time that sort of define you? For me its several things including skateboarding, surfing, camping, hiking, swimming, slacklining, and going on road trips. Most people don’t believe me that I’ve been skateboarding for 21 years! I first learned how to ollie when I was just 13 years old and ever since then skateboarding has been a part of my life. You could say the same for surfing. I remember my parents got me my first surfboard for my 16th birthday and ever since that day I’ve enjoyed riding waves all over California and Hawaii. I don’t surf as much as I’d like to these days, but someday I will move to Hawaii and surf everyday. At a young age my parents instilled in me a love for nature and camping. In just the past few years I’ve camped all over California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah. I’ve camped in the Sequoia National Forest in the snow! Man that was cold! I’ve hiked some of the famous trails in Yosemite Valley and I’ve stayed up all night in Joshua Tree watching meteors streak across the night sky. I have a passion for photographing beautiful landscapes. You’ll see some of my work under the Fine Art section above.
